Circular Quay Romance

May 1, 2012

Circular Quay has always been an amazing place to get wedding photos. From Circular Quay, the rocks, which is one of the most popular and most photographed wedding locations in Sydney, is accessible, and Circular Quay is also right next to the Sydney Opera House. What is often forgotten, however, is that the part of Circular Quay in between these two areas is also beautiful. Recently, I did a romance-themed shoot right in the middle of Circular Quay.

Models: Ben-Jamin Newham, Elizabeth Pearson

Hair + Makeup: Burton Yuen

Featherdale Wildlife Park

April 7, 2012

I’ve never been to Featherdale but it’s a great place to get up close to Australian wildlife. You can pet kangaroos and koalas, and the animals are little wallabies running all over the farm that you can play with as well. I went there with a couple of friends of mine recently, some who have never seen Australian wildlife up close before, so it was a great experience.

P.s. Emus look so evil and aggressive in person, and they have a voice to match. I wouldn’t want to get into a fight with one

Introducing my new car

March 19, 2012

Things have been awesome for me. It’s all been up and up. 1 year ago I couldn’t have ever dreamed I would have been where I am today. Thank you to everyone who has supported me so far, and I promise I’ll keep working hard to make you all proud.

After all this hard work, I’ve decided to reward myself with a little present. I got a new car recently. Check it out.

I’m just kidding. This past year there’s been a lot of ups and downs, and I’m definitely proud of what I have accomplished. While it is true that I’ve achieved more than I could have hoped for even just a year ago, the hardships still remind me that there’s a long way to go. I feel blessed to be able to say that I get paid to be a visual story teller, and I thank all those who have given me the privilege of sharing theirs.

Osaka | momoiro paradise Street performance in Namba

March 6, 2012

One of the newest and hottest street bands in Osaka is もも色パラダイス. They’ve recently been voted the Number 2 street band in The Kinki region (Osaka, Kyoto, Nara, Hyogo, etc.) and the Number 5 national street band. I met up with them to shoot one of their impromptu street performances in the middle of Osaka, at the famous Dotonbori.

Even though it’s really cold in Osaka at the moment, and it’s been snowing for a while, there’s still an awesome atmosphere in the markets of Nanba on the weekends.

Dotonbori in Osaka

They’ve been busy doing gigs on the streets of Osaka, and you can usually see them around Umeda and Namba, or the famous Dotonbori. They have strong voices and great presence so I expect to see much more of them in the future.
They have an official website but as is with most Japanese bands the website is aimed at views on mobile phone, so don’t be fooled by the design of the site.
They have also been featured on Kansai TV. The second video below is a recording of one of their street performances. The last is an official Music Video they have recently released.

This is a bit different to the usual stuff you see here, but it was fun to be able to go out and do something a bit different.

Sydney Weddings | Mari & Tim

February 24, 2012

Tim was originally from Sydney, but moved away to the US for college. While he was over there, he met Mari and they held their wedding over there. While they now live in the US, they decided they wanted to have a reception in Australia for everyone in this end of the world.

Their reception, however, was as international as their story, and there were guests from numerous countries including Singapore, Malaysia, and South Korea.

Their reception was held at the Imperial Peking Restaurant at the Rocks. The Imperial Restaurant has an amazing view of the harbour. The Rocks was a really beautiful place to have our short portrats session as well, especially because Mari had never been to The Rocks before.

Away to Osaka

February 17, 2012

I’ve been in Osaka the past few weeks, so I haven’t had much time to update the blog, but I will be coming back soon with new work. For now, here’s something for the tech nerds out there like me.

I got to play with both the D4 and the 1Dx today. They both look amazing and produce great photos from what I can tell, but this is all from the little screens on the back of both cameras, so take that how you want.

From what I saw, however, it seemed like the 1dx performed significantly better at ISOs higher than 12,800. That might have something to do with the fact that the natural ISO range on the D4 only goes up to 12,800 and everything else is H1, H2, etc.

Sydney Photography | Punk shoot at Cockatoo Island

January 9, 2012

The weather has been so unpredictable these days that it’s been hard to get any work locked in for sure. This particular shoot has been postponed for rain for a few weeks now, but finally on the day of the shoot we had good weather. And not just good either. It was AMAZING and sunny and everything the model Anabelle and I had missed for the past month.

Cockatoo Island has a lot of amazing warehouses that were completely empty. I guess people preferred to spend their sunny summer days at a beach rather than a dusty old warehouse. Can you blame them?

There are also random chairs sitting in the middle of nowhere all around Cockatoo Island. This chair was sitting in a big ray of light right in front of the most awesome graffiti wall I’ve seen in Sydney.
